The Story Behind Build A Menu
The idea for Build A Menu first originated in early 2010 when Karee Blunt was searching the internet trying to find a meal planning service that would work for her family. Like many busy moms, she found getting dinner prepared each day was often stressful and was hoping to find a way to make menu planning and grocery shopping a little easier. After trying a few services, she realized that the menu service she was looking for wasn’t out there and the idea behind Build A Menu was born.
Karee enlisted her sister, Lisa Holcomb, as her business partner and together the two of them began researching, planning and brainstorming all the ways they could make their menu planning site the best on the market. However, they are both stay at home, homeschooling moms and although the business idea sounded great, life was simply too busy to ever really get it started.
Fast forward to spring 2011. During one of their discussions, they talked about the idea of giving part of the proceeds to orphan care ministries and suddenly, the business took on a whole new purpose! They realized that Build A Menu has the potential to help a lot of orphan care ministries and since adoption is something important to both of them, the business took on a life of its own and the two of them decided it was time to finally get Build A Menu off the ground. They are thrilled to be on this adventure together and are looking forward to seeing how BAM is able to help others in life!
About Karee
Karee Blunt is married to Rodney, her high school sweetheart, and lives in beautiful Washington State. (Although she grew up in Texas and visits “home” as often as she can!) They have five children, ages 2-17, three of whom are adopted (two from Russia, one from China). Karee and Rodney also have a financial ministry they use to coach families on how to develop a budget, get out of debt and build up their savings. Karee has taught classes and held workshops specifically for women, teaching them how to create and manage a budget. It was thru this ministry that she did personal and online surveys and found that groceries are the number one budget buster for most households. Her hope is that Build A Menu will help many families be able to plan their meals and stay within their grocery budget each week. Karee’s degree is in Business/Marketing, which she is putting to good use helping promote Build A Menu.
About Lisa
Lisa Holcomb lives near Austin, Texas with her husband, Will, and their four boys, ages 8-17. (Her oldest two children are married and have babies of their own.) She and Will adopted their youngest two boys through the Texas foster care system. Lisa often finds that living in a house full of boys means she’d better be ahead of the game when it comes to planning dinner since they’re almost always hungry! They are quite happy to be one of Build A Menu’s test kitchens. Lisa’s degree is in Child and Family Development and she is a strong advocate for family meal time. She has spent many hours researching the positive effects and benefits of families that eat meals together as well as the negative effects not eating together as a family can have on children and teens and she hopes to help educate families on this research. Her goal is that through Build A Menu families will be able to bring meal time back to the table.
